Background

The Department of Computer Science from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon* (DI/FCT/UNL) has always played a leading role in Portugal regarding higher education and research in Computer Science.

In 1975, the Department has pioneered this area in the Portuguese Universities, by starting the first under-graduate programme in Computer Science (Licenciatura em Engenharia Informática). In the early 1980's, it was responsible for the first PhDs granted in Portugal in Computer Science.

Since then, DI has kept its leading position in the formation of PhDs in Computer Science, with more than 50 PhD diplomas granted over the years. Currently, DI has more than 30 students enrolled in doctoral studies in Computer Science.

The restructuring of the University degrees, following the transposition into Portuguese institutions of the "Bologna process", changed key aspects of the University programmes, such as their goals and duration. Both the former Licenciatura and Mestrado underwent deep transformations in their adaptation to new programmes for the 1st and 2nd cycles, namely by shortening their total duration.

In this context, the new Doctoral Programme in Computer Science formalises a new 3rd cycle programme, that crowns the teaching of Computer Science in the Department by including a Ph.D. course, and takes advantage of the research done at the Research Centres hosted by the Department, and integrating the students in their research activities during the preparation of their Ph.D. dissertations.
